Vinyl, LP SmartSide, James Hardie or Steel: Choosing Siding in Minnesota
By Joey Brue · August 27, 2026

Homeowners in our area usually choose between four siding materials: vinyl, LP SmartSide engineered wood, James Hardie fiber cement and steel. The simplest way to decide is to weigh how much you want to spend up front against how much maintenance you're willing to take on. The lowest-maintenance options generally cost the most at the start.
Vinyl
The most common and most affordable option. It never needs paint and holds up well in Minnesota winters when it's nailed correctly. Quality varies a lot: thin, unbacked vinyl dents and looks hollow, while thicker insulated vinyl looks more substantial and adds some R-value. Dark colors can fade faster and are more prone to warping in strong sun.
LP SmartSide
Engineered wood that delivers a real wood look with treatment against moisture and pests. It has better impact resistance than vinyl. It does need periodic painting, and every cut edge and seam has to be sealed to the manufacturer's spec, because that detail decides whether it reaches its full lifespan.
James Hardie fiber cement
A premium, low-maintenance choice made from cement, sand and cellulose fiber. It holds paint far longer than wood, resists impact and moisture, and stays dimensionally stable. It's heavier, needs specific cutting tools and techniques, and costs more to install. For homeowners staying long term, the durability and paint life often make up the difference.
Steel
The strongest impact resistance of the group, which appeals to homeowners who worry about hail. It comes in lap and vertical profiles and keeps its finish for a long time.
Installation matters more than the material
Most siding failures in Minnesota aren't material failures. They happen at the transitions: around windows, at corners, where a roof meets a wall. Housewrap lapped in the right order, window flashing and kickout flashing are what keep water out of the wall, whatever siding goes on top.

Frequently asked questions
Is James Hardie or steel worth the higher cost?
If you plan to stay in the home long term, the longer life and lower maintenance can offset the higher upfront cost.
Does LP SmartSide need to be repainted?
Yes, periodically, like traditional wood siding. Vinyl never needs paint.
Why does fiber cement cost more than vinyl?
It's heavier, needs specific tools and techniques, and takes longer to install correctly, on top of a higher material cost.
