How a Roof Insurance Claim Works in Minnesota, Explained Plainly

By Joey Brue · September 10, 2026

After a hail or wind storm, a lot of homeowners aren't sure where to start. This is a general overview of how a roof claim typically works. Your coverage, deductible and depreciation terms depend entirely on your own policy, so confirm the details with your insurance provider.

1. Get the roof looked at

Hail and wind damage often can't be seen from the ground. An on-roof assessment with photos tells you what you're dealing with before you call your insurer. We document the roof plus gutters, vents, siding and window wraps, since storms hit more than shingles.

2. File the claim

You contact your insurance company to open a claim. They'll schedule an adjuster.

3. The adjuster inspects

The adjuster inspects the roof and issues a scope of loss: what they've agreed was damaged and what they'll pay to repair or replace.

4. Pick your contractor and approve the scope

You choose who does the work. Once the scope is agreed with the insurer, the project gets scheduled.

5. Depreciation is released

Many policies hold back part of the payout, called depreciation, until the work is finished. It's typically released once the job is complete and the final invoice is submitted.

Things to keep in mind

  • Keep the photos and the scope of loss together
  • Tarp any opening right away to prevent more damage
  • Read your policy's deadlines for filing and finishing work
  • Be careful with anyone offering to cover or "waive" your deductible

If you think a storm hit your roof, schedule a storm damage assessment. We'll photograph everything and explain what we found.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

A roofer's assessment first means you know what you're dealing with before you open a claim. Either way, confirm your coverage with your insurer.

What is depreciation on a roof claim?

It's the part of the payout held back until the work is done. It's typically released after the job is complete and the final invoice is submitted.

Will a claim cover a repair or a full replacement?

That depends on your policy and the damage the adjuster documents.
